The purpose of school is to produce an environment that allows students to develop their intellectual skills, social skills, and create political and civic sense of responsibility. Today’s society is diverse and requires one to be able to confront new challenges without self-doubt or fear of failure. Through school, students should learn how to be a productive member of society by working with peers and learning the appropriate ways of interacting and being responsible. Students should also understand and practice critical thinking to prepare for our stimulating society. Finally, students should expand their academic knowledge in order to be successful in life.
Learning refers to acquiring new or modifying existing knowledge. Overall, learning is a process that students participate in. The learning process requires students to experience, practice, and study. In order for learning to take place, students are required to be engaged in the learning process. The classroom should be filled with student engagement, active learning, as well as guidance and instruction from the teacher along the way. Teachers should be committed to their students and encourage them to discover and develop without giving students the answers. Teachers should set up lessons in which students are engaged in a productive struggle. This productive struggle should challenge students and push them to explore and make connections in order to learn. Guidance from teachers allows students to build an understanding for the material while giving it meaning because the students discover the answer. Student engagement is key in the learning process because students are not just memorizing information, but instead are developing independent and critical thinking through acquisition of knowledge.
As the teacher in a student-centered learning environment, one should get to know the students and take the student’s learning style into consideration when making the lesson plan. This will allow students to learn in a constructive manner that helps guide their learning in a way that is easy for them to understand the material. Different strategies and activities are provided in order for the student to work through and understand the subject matter. When working in groups, students should be placed in heterogeneous groups. Heterogeneous groups allow students of mixed abilities to work together and solve the problems given to them. Because the students have mixed abilities, the higher-level students can help guide the lower-level students. This interaction would also help prepare students for real-life interactions by encouraging discussion. In order to create a student-centered environment, I will use inquiry, projects, guided discovery, and discussion. By using the inquiry strategy, students will be stimulated to explore and discover while using critical thinking about the subject being studied. Projects will allow students to investigate and learn more on a given topic. Guided discovery will engage students and set up a way for them to discover the principle, rule, or generalization being studied. Discussion will allow open conversation that stimulates students to respond divergently and at higher cognitive levels to what they have been learning. These strategies will allow students to be active members in the learning process.
A quality curriculum should focus on foundational and core skills. With a society that is always changing, it is vital for the curriculum to change and be molded to fit the always-shifting culture. The core skills should be kept in the curriculum but how students learn the material should be altered to keep students engaged. Students should have a say in how they learn the material in order to increase motivation and keep students engaged. In our society today, technology is becoming a huge part of our daily lives and should be used in the classroom and used in every teacher’s curriculum. The most up to date technology is vital for both students and teachers to use in the classroom to enrich learning. Technology can help stimulate student’s thinking and engage them in the lessons. Teachers need to help students become comfortable with technology and enhance their skills for their future. Technology should not be used as a replacement, but instead should help guide student discovery.
