Learning requires taking risks. Students will not take risks until they feel comfortable in their environment. In order to make students feel comfortable in their environment, a learning community must be created. Students will develop positive self-esteem and peer relationships through community. Students will be able to take risks and learn more effectively when they feel part of a learning community.
The material that I chose to represent Standard #5 is a Morning Meeting lesson plan. Morning Meeting is part of the Responsive Classroom framework. This semester I was able to learn about Responsive Classroom and witness how effective it can be for students to become self-directed learners. Morning Meeting is one of the main components of Responsive Classroom in which the class comes together at the beginning of the day to build a learning community and set students up for success both socially and academically. During Morning Meeting, everyone greets one another, some students share, a morning message is read, and a group activity is completed. Through this process, the group is able to develop a community that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning and self-motivation.
Students should be taught to establish a strong community in order to have a positive, productive learning environment. During my first placement in a first grade general education setting, it was evident that the class I was placed in had learned the value of community and was working on understanding and maintaining self-control. Each morning, students and teachers were brought together through morning meeting. During morning meeting, students learn and reinforce the essential components of community, such as knowing names, taking turns, sharing, making room in the circle, and being friendly to peers. Students are also beginning to understand what self-control is and how to practice this skill in the classroom. Since I am in a first grade class, most of the students are just beginning to understand self-control. They are taught to raise their hand, take turns, regulate their body movement, anticipate consequences for their actions, and be a positive member of the classroom community. During this placement we were working on problem solving. We wanted the students to solve social and academic problems in order to learn and further understand self-control and how to be a positive community member.
It is essential that as a teacher, I understand individual and group motivation and behaviors in order to successfully guide the creation of a community and establish a positive learning environment. Students should be encouraged to create positive social interactions and engage in learning and self-motivation in order to develop socially and academically. When students feel as though they are a part of a group and that you are investing in them, they will invest in you. There is no better motivation than the feeling of acceptance and the want to be your best to contribute to a learning community.
