Standard #10: Partnerships
The teacher fosters relationships with school colleagues, parents, and agencies in the larger community to support students' learning and well being.

Relationships with school colleagues, families, and agencies in the larger community are important to support students’ learning and overall well being. It is essential that teachers work with related services professionals when designing and implementing plans for a student, especially when developing the IEP. It is also important that teachers and families collaborate and have open communication in order to provide information about the student and develop a support system to help the student be successful. The teacher, other professionals, and families collaborate with one another to make sure that students are valued members of the classroom, school, and community.
The artifact that I chose to demonstrate Standard #10 was a News Letter sent home to a parent about a student in my special education placement at Dutch Neck Elementary. Each week, my cooperating teacher sends home a News Letter to every student’s families that details what happened during the week, something that the student did well, and something that the student needs to work on. If a parent has a question or concern they are encouraged to email my cooperating teacher in order to obtain more details. Through the News Letter, my cooperating teacher and the families of the students in the class are able to communicate and collaborate about student progress and discuss any additional practice that could be done outside of the classroom in order for the student to be even more successful.
With IEP testing taking place in the last few weeks of my special education student teaching placement, I have had time to work with the students in the class more and have contributed to the News Letter comments. Not only do they give an important opportunity for collaboration, but they also allow you to reflect on the week and think about each individual student’s strengths and needs as a learner and any techniques you can use to support their growth. Writing the comments allowed me to think about the progress that was made throughout the week and how to further help the students in the class. Providing information to the parents about what we worked on during the week and offering suggestions of what to work on at home with each student created an open collaboration for how to help the student succeed together.
The artifact above demonstrates my growth as a teacher because I was able to recognize the value of collaboration for student success. I will use the News Letter technique in addition to communicating with school colleagues, families, and agencies in the larger community to support students’ learning and their well being. Each student is unique and requires support in and out of the classroom. Creating a team to encourage learning and growth that helps the student be successful in the general curriculum and to achieve the goals of their IEP is something I will do in the future.
