All students should be provided with multiple and alternative modes of communication and technology that foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the classroom in order to develop as learners. This means that teachers should create safe and comfortable environments in which students are encouraged and supported to use language and contribute their ideas. It also means using computer technology as an aid in research and learning whenever possible.
The material that I chose to represent Standard #6 was a science lesson about understanding the weather and dressing appropriately depending on the conditions. Through discussion and an interactive Smartboard manipulative, students were able to correctly identify appropriate clothing for a specific weather condition given and dress a bear. Verbal communication was demonstrated during the direct instruction and active discussion about the four seasons and the weather conditions that are most common during each season. Nonverbal communication was used when students put a thumb up or down to agree or disagree with whether or not they agreed with how a peer dressed the bear when a specific weather condition was given. Collaboration was demonstrated during the matching activity, following the Smartboard activity, which was completed at their desks. Using a variety of communication modalities, students were able to engage in the lesson and actively construct an understanding of the seasons, weather, and appropriate clothing.
It is important that there is a variety of communication throughout the lesson to allow all different learners a chance to contribute ideas and promote effective communication. Using technology in the lesson gave students an opportunity to visually see the articles of clothing going on the bear and was highly motivating because of how fun it was to manipulate the different articles of clothing on the Smartboard. One of the girls in the class has an auditory impairment. Using the interactive visual gave her a chance to see the clothing and contribute to the lesson, but also allowed her to feel comfortable because she understood what was going on. The matching activity was a great opportunity for students who are kinesthetic learners to cut and glue the different articles of clothing to the correct picture, while having open discussions on any articles of clothing that were confusing. Overall, using different communication approaches in this lesson supported student learning, collaboration, and encouraged interactions in the classroom.
The artifact above shows my growth as a teacher because I was able to reach all the learners in the room through different forms of communication. Students participated in verbal, nonverbal, and media communication in order to learn about weather and construct their ideas through supportive interactions in the classroom. In my future teaching, I will continue to include a variety of communication techniques in my lessons because I have seen how successful they are in supporting the many different learners in every classroom.
